Karen Edelblum, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, Molecular & Cell-Based Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Her current research program focuses on elucidating the underlying mechanisms by which gamma delta intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) contribute to maintenance of mucosal homeostasis. She was the first to show that gamma delta IELs migrate dynamically along the intestinal epithelium to prevent microbial translocation and her laboratory continues to investigate how these sentinel lymphocytes are dysregulated in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Dr. Edelblum serves as a standing member of NIH NIDDK DHMI study section, councilor on the Immunology, Microbiology & IBD Section of the American Gastroenterological Association, Chair of the American Physiological Society Gastrointestinal & Liver Section and Co-Chair of the Crohn’s and Colitis Congress.
