Dr. Panaccione is a distinguished Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit at the University of Calgary. He also serves as the Dean of MD Admissions and directs the university’s IBD Fellowship Program. Dr. Panaccione holds the prestigious Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Endowed Research Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
A dedicated clinician, educator, and researcher, Dr. Panaccione has received numerous honors, including recognition as a Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Visiting Professor, the 2020 Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Outstanding Physician of the Year, and the Crohn's and Colitis Canada 2024 Research Leadership Award. From 2020 to 2024, he has also been recognized as a Clarivate Research Scholar, placing him in the top 1% of the world’s most-cited researchers.
With an extensive publication record, Dr. Panaccione has co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 9 book chapters, and 726 abstracts. His research has appeared in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, Nature, and Annals of Internal Medicine. He is also an active peer reviewer for prestigious journals such as NEJM, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, and Gut. As a founding member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada PACE initiative, a $5 million program, Dr. Panaccione is widely regarded as an authority on IBD therapeutics leading many Phase 2b/3 trials of new therapies in IBD. He has contributed extensively to the development of national guidelines for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology.
In addition to his research and clinical roles, Dr. Panaccione is a visionary in IBD education. He co-founded and chairs the Canada Future Directions in IBD program with Crohn’s and Colitis Canada and co-founded the Canadian GI Residents Course in IBD in 2010. Known for his engaging teaching style, he has led numerous international courses in IBD and has delivered over 150 invited lectures across the globe in the last five years.
For his outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Panaccione has received the prestigious Finkelstein Award, the highest honor from Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. He was also elected as a member of the International Organization for the Study of IBD (IOIBD) in 2012, underscoring his influence and leadership on an international scale.
