Dr. Stefan Holubar was born and raised on Long Island. Under the mentorship of Neil Hyman MD, he received his MD from University of Vermont in 2002 after overcoming stage 3 colon cancer related to long-standing chronic ulcerative colitis treated with a modified 2-stage IPAA. After medical school, Stefan completed a General Surgery Residency at North Shore-LIJ in 2007, and then completed a 2-year master’s in clinical & Translational Research, and a clinical Colorectal Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester, 2007 – 2010. After Mayo, he joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2010, and in 2015 was appointed Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery. Given his long-standing interest in Surgery for IBD, in Aug. 2017 Dr. Holubar accepted a position as a Staff Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Ohio. Presently within the Department of Colon & Rectal Surgery is a lead member of the IBD Surgery Section, the Colorectal Departmental Director of Research, and the NSQIP Surgeon Champion for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. On a national level, Dr. Holubar is actively engaged in helping lead the NSQIP IBD Collaborative, serves as Chair for the ASCRS IBD Committee, Co-Chair for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Professional Education Committee. To date he has published >230 peer-reviewed articles, more than half of which are on IBD, over a dozen book chapters, & 1 book (coeditor). His main clinical and research focus is IBD, with a special interest in redo IPAA. Recently contributions to the field of IBD surgery include describing Twisted Pouch Syndrome, the Mesenteric Excision and Exclusion procedure, and 3D Pouchography. Finally, Dr. Holubar is the PI for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s longitudinal surgical cohort, IBD-SIRCQ (Surgical Innovation, Research, & Quality Collaborative).
